Who We Are
The DMV Bund is a Jewish, anti-zionist organization built on the legacy of the Jewish Labor Bund (JLB), a political organization born out of the Russian Empire in 1897. The JLB was a labor union and socialist political party that formed in response to abuses against workers, state-sponsored anti-semitic violence, and the need to survive. Today, we build on this legacy by the JLB’s framework to address 21st century concerns:
דאָיִקייט |
Doikayt | Hereness |
Wherever we are in the diaspora, we fight for a future in which all peoples, including Jews, have a right to cultural autonomy and self-determination. We affirm that all people have a right to their religious and cultural practices, in safety and with dignity, wherever we find ourselves. |
ייִדישקייט |
Yiddishkeit | Jewishness |
We affirm our Jewishness, and celebrate our languages and traditions. We represent a culturally diverse constellation of interpretations of Judaism and Jewishness. We acknowledge the Bund’s Ashkenazi roots, and commit to developing our Jewishness in the direction of universal emancipation. |
חבֿרשאַפֿט |
Khavershaft | Solidarity |
We stand in the struggle for freedom alongside all people marginalized and exploited by systems of oppression including capitalism, colonialism, and ethnonationalism. We work to reckon with Jewish peoples’ complicity in these systems. Historically, this pillar was limited to socialism. |
